Hello, I am 25 years old; I was diagnosed with GERD about 5 years ago. I have had several endoscopes, which showed a mild hital hernia. I have also had the 24hr pH indictor test, which was positive for GERD. Two years ago, I begin with gallbladder problems. I had a nuclear medicine CCK stim exam; results showed that my gallbladder was functioning at 11%. I had my gallbladder removed and my gallbladder pain disappeared. I have also been diagnosed with mild asthma. I am currently taking Prevacid 60 mg a day. I was taking Propulsid for a period of time, which helped greatly. I understand now that the drugs that are replacing Propulsid have terrible side affects. I have tried Prilosec and Acidphlex; they both made my problems worse. I constantly have a sore throat, my ENT scoped me and my epiglottis was irritated. I am currently suffering from a major “flare up” of my GERD. Everything I eat is painful; I get nausea, and sharp pains in my chest (after eating). I was told to take 3 Maalox tabs before every meal. This does not work. I am seriously considering surgery. My internist is against surgery. He told me that he saw a patient that underwent the surgery, and their diaphragm was nicked. The patient died. I’m wondering if you might have any suggestions in treatment. Also is surgery as risky as I am afraid it is? Thank you for time.
