Survived a Nissen fundoplication (and my asthma is better)From: Erika CommentsI had a lap Nissen last week Thursday. The first thing I noticed post-op was that I was unable to sit up on my own. I've since learned that some of the puncture sites (two of the five?) go through some abdominal muscle that you use to sit up. So if you are considering this procedure, make sure you have someone around to help you sit up (especially at home where they don't have those cool movable hospital beds). It's been six days since the operation and it's still painful to try and sit up on my own. I also notice that I belch non-stop (I still try to be a lady about it, of course). My doctors said that would happen. It's not clear if this will be an on-going problem or not. When you have the operation, the pump your torso full of carbon dioxide, and this does two things - it stretches out the muscles of your torso, and this adds to your soreness. Two, it takes a while (weeks?) for your body to absorb the gas, so there is pressure on your lungs and you may have a therapist come to your room to help you with some breathing exercises so you don't have problems with your lungs. Plus, it just feels like you have horrible gas. If you do, let it all out, as much as you can. This sounds gross, but you need to do it. I've noticed that since the surgery my asthma problems have plummeted. I'm not kidding. I went from needed an inhaler almost daily to not having used it once since the surgery. I'm not going to comment yet on whether or not my reflux symptoms have been "cured", because the wrap site is still sore and swollen, so Im not in a position to comment on the surgery's effectiveness. However, it seems to be working great. I haven't been on Priloec since the surgery and I haven't experienced and reflux. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me at erika@kingan.com. I'll try to keep everyone posted on my recovery. I have my 10-day post-op visit on Feb 1, so I'll know then if things are normal or not. Erika Last changed: January 11, 2008 |
