Good points but nobody knows for sure. Some causes of LES relaxation are overweight or pregnancy which causes an increased intraabdominal pressure. Caffeine and nicotine also affect it, I'd guess age as well except infants can also get it.This is not to discount yours or Ed's views. Stress probably can factor in with all disease. Lastly just to clarify one point you made I don't think our esophogus suddenly becomes hypersensitive to stomach acid; it's not meant to go there. The stomach has a special mucosal barrier that can protect it from the low ph very acidic environment; wheras the esophogus doesn't. Repeated reflux can damage the tissue because it's not made to handle the acid.Than you get risk of Barrett's esophogus which can be a precursor to cancer.
