Hiatal Hernia during pregnancy

Hi.. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia almost 4 years ago, right after my son was born. I had heartburn during the pregnancy, nothing severe though. After he was born I continued to get the heartburn. That is when the doctor told me I had a hiatal hernia (by doing an endoscopy). I have been on prilosec since then. At one point it got really bad....inflammation and erosion of my esophagus. I was on 40mg prilosec at the time. Now I am doing fine on 20 mg. I try to watch what I eat. Here is the situation...I want to get off prilosec since it is not safe to take during pregnancy. My husband and I want to have more children soon, I am just so nervous about getting pregnant with this whole acid reflux thing. Any suggestions?? My doctor seems to think I will be fine if I don't gain too much and really watch what I eat. He also told me I could take a med called carafate (an ulcer med) that will coat my insides. Has anone ever been in a situation like this or know of any woman that has a hiatal hernia and has managed to get through a pregnancy? I am desparate for an answer.
