Re: Gastritis and a Hiatal HerniaFrom: famnd CommentsI have a sliding hiatal hernia. My major problem with it is if I forget and lean over quickly at waist level, I get very severe pain upper abdominal pain that lasts several hours. Then I end up vomiting and not being able to eat for a day or two. I've learned to be very careful in my movements. I think that my stomach gets twisted and causes the pain. BTW my stomach was full when these episodes happened.
Most people with GERD have a sliding type of hiatal hernia, but not all people with this type of hernia have heartburn according to the latest GI medical textbook I read in the bookstore. I finally found out at one of the links on this site that the stomach actually does slide back and forth from the stomach to the chest. What determines when it slides? Is it like a balloon when filled with air floats and when filled with the weight of water falls? It would be helpful to find out how to keep the stomach in the abdomen which might lessen the heartburn problem. For now, I drink two glasses of water first thing in the morning before breakfast while I'm on my exercise bike. Then I walk for 1/2hr after breaksfast. I figure the weight of the water may help pull the stomach down plus I'll get hydrated before eating so I won't have to add to the bulk in the stomach. Oh, I did read in the medical text that patients have to be very careful not to get their stomachs too full as it creates too much pressure when it descends into the abdomen. I try to limit my volume of food to two cups at the most. I feel very full and get pressure if I exceed this limit. The average capacity of the is 4 cups unless it has been stretched by overeating according to my sources. I'm trying to improve my present heartburn prevention plan by finding out as much as I can about what is going on. There is a lot more info these days than in the 80's when I started on this road.
