Endoscopy in office or outpatient?

I just visited a GI specialist, who told me that he didn't think I had anything more serious than a severe case of reflux. Of course, he wants to do an endoscopy. From the posts here, I pretty much know what to expect. But I still have a question and would appreciate anyone's opinions.

The doctor said he could do the endoscopy in his office. All I'd get is a spray of novocaine at the back of the throat (no sedation), and I'd feel like I couldn't swallow. I told him I'd freak out if I was awake, so he said he could sedate me at the hospital, as an outpatient.

I would really prefer to be sedated, but don't want to spend 6-7 hours at the hospital, sleeping. Is this procedure really horrible without sedation? Do you feel anything if you're not sedated? Does anyone know where I can get a lifetime supply of Prevacid and avoid this entire procedure? ;-)

Thanks a lot for your suggestions!
