I didn't find mine all that helpul, except psychologically perhaps, but that was because everything was going well, and my surgeon was able to confirm that.
You might want to call and ask if you need to make the trip -- it's possible that if you answer some questions for them on the phone, they'll be able to tell whether an in-person visit is needed.
For what it's worth, my surgeon charged me up front for everything, so you've probably already paid for your office visits, even if you don't use them.
