Paul, I think you are so right about our stomachs needing a certain amount of acid to digest properly. I couldn't see putting the digestive enzymes on top of the PPIs, which seemed a bit too much like taking uppers and then downwers. But this is exactly why I tried so hard to get off PPIs, and at least cut back to once a day. When I cut back the PPI dosage, the stomach pain stopped, and things seemed to work better, and I felt so much better overall.
However, I could feel the chest pain getting worse as the esophagitis progressed. I could not have gone on like that indefinitely, but I was scheduled for surgery and figured that the esophagitis would clear up afterward.
