I've also been wondering what effect, if any, ppi's have on throat burn and soreness.
My main, if only symptom, is throat soreness. It didn't start until AFTER I was on max doses of prilosec, prevacid, and then protonix. Prior to the throat symptoms, I was being treated for noncardiac chest pain, thought to be related to reflux.
ENT looks in throat, says larynx is inflamed, probably due to reflux. Endoscopy shows inflammed LES. Sounds like a diagnosis of GERD, right? PPI's have not eliminated, or even reduced, my throat symptoms. As I said, the throat symptoms started AFTER I was on the ppi's for 2-3 months.
One certainly has to wonder about this. There are many who continue to have throat symptoms after surgery. Nobody knows why, if surgery is successful in stopping reflux, it doesn't always stop throat symptoms. I am told throat problems can take a while to heal, but we do have to wonder if the ppi's are indeed the culprit.
So do we keep taking ppi's thinking that we are trying to prevent acid irritation of the throat, or do we stop ppi's and see if throat symptoms improve after 6-12 months?
Would be interesting to hear from others who continue to have throat problems on ppi's and even after surgery.
