Eric,

I just had my second scope in 6 months, about 2 wks ago. Believe me, the worst part, in fact the only bad part, is all the worrying you're probably subjecting yourself to thinking about it.

I would bet that you will have IV conscious sedation, which basically means they will insert an IV in your hand and inject a couple drugs to make you sleepy. Most people, myself included, had no recollection of the procedure as it occurred, once I was given the drugs (usually versed, demerol, or some other sedative).I don't know about Sack, but most who undergo scopes don't do it without being sedated. I'm not sure why Sack chose to do it that way, but its not something I would recommend.

Did I mention, the worst part is the pre-procedure worry?

I had both of my scopes done in an operating type room at the hospital. Some hospitals have endoscopy suites, making the experience less anxiety-provoking, which, by the way, is the worst part - thinking about it.

The procedure itself is the easiest by far of all the gi tests I've had done and it yields a treasure full of info to help the doc diagnose and treat your condition. If they do it by way of IV sedation, you will probably be so relaxed and sleep during the procedure. You'll only be in lalaland for about 30 minutes and then you'll slowly regain awareness, at which point you'll feel absolutely great. Did I mention, the only bad part is thinking about the procedure?

You'll probably be hooked up to equipment so they can monitor your vital signs and they may place an oxygen mask on, but not to worry, its all to make certain all goes well, which 99.9% of the time it does. There's really nothing at all to worry about, but like most people, you probably are worried. But the pre-test worry is the ONLY bad part!

So, no need to lose any sleep over it. The procedure is over in no time and you'll feel much better after knowing the good info they got from it.

Did I mention, the worst part is the all the worry about the procedure?

So Eric, don't sweat it, don't fret it.

Hope all turns out to be a day at the beach. Here's to your good health.

Paul
