I underwent a nissen fundoplication (full wrap) in September, 2001. I did this as Prilosec was not relieving my heartburn and I wanted to head off Barrett's, as my espohogus had started changing to salmon color (biopsies were negative though). Everything was wonderful for 2 weeks, then I developed a fever, tenderness in the sternum area, a terrible cough, and severe vomiting as I ate, not to mention the return of GERD. I went back on Prilosec twice a day without much relief.
A barium esophogram showed reflux to the level of my collarbone. An endoscopy showed that my stomach was still wrapped, but could not determine if there was a problem with the wrap.
I had a second fundo 2 weeks ago. The surgeon discovered that the stomach was vertically positioned correctly and the sutures were still in place, but the stomach had pulled back to where the wrap was only approxiately 320 degrees instead of the original 360. He re-wrapped the stomach 360 degrees.
The night of the surgery, I had severe dry heaves (I guess due to nausea from the anesthetic). Four days after surgery, GERD returned with a vengence. I'm back on Prilosec twice a day. It doesn't help and I'm eating antacids like candy.
My surgeon is not even considering another fundo. He thinks I'd be a poor candidate for the Stretta because of the 2 failed fundos. I've never heard of the EndoCinch...has anyone here ever had this procedure? Does anyone have any other suggestions?
