Jill, no Pepcid is an H2 blocker. The PPIs are stronger and they include drugs like Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, Aciphex. If the Pepcid is really working, then I can see why the doctor hasn't prescribed a PPI yet.
But on the other hand, most doctors like a 2-week trial as a way of "testing" for reflux. If you respond very well in that time, and most patients do, then it is for sure reflux that is causing the trouble.
I have very mixed feelings about all this. I had the surgery and an excellent outcome. But the surgery itself was not fun, and I have permanently changed my body.
On the other hand, another part of me wishes I'd had the surgery sooner, because I clearly have some long term damage to my throat. When I get a cold, I get a much worse sore throat than in my pre-GERD days.
