Hi Jill:
Have you considered,or tried speech therapy? It is the only thing that has even begun to help my voice. I am not hoarse, never was --- I suffer from some sort of muscle tension pulling the cords in the "wrong" direction, causing pain. This started from reflux, but then created a whole other problem.
Anyway, I do know from my speech pathologist that the bulk of her patients with voice disorders that don't come from physical illness, such as stroke, are teachers and performers, since they use their voice constantly.
One thing she HIGHLY recommends is a classroom microphone. Do you use one? She says that a lot of school districts will pay to have the room wired if a doctor can write a letter saying it's necessary for your vocal health. As a matter of fact she feels strongly that EVERY teacher should use one, even if they are not experiencing vocal pain, just as a preventative measure. My daughter is a 2nd grade teacher, and she says her voice can feel very tired by the end of the day. I am urging her to look into microphones.
Maybe speech therapy and a microphone might help, if you haven't already explored those options? Best of luck ! Sharon
