Re: what is "throat clearing" ?

I occasionally have throat clearing that I think is caused by reflux, either primary or secondary to reflux.

Primary to reflux would be when acid actually gets in your throat and you have to clear it out. Secondary would be if the acid causes your larynx to be irritated, then the sensitive tissues in this area actually produce mucous to protect it and you feel the need to clear the mucous.

For me, throat clearing is experienced as an urge to push air out through my voice box/larynx because I feel something in there (mucous, acid?). When I clear my throat, I usually make a noise (sounds like a grunt).

Hope this helps!

Paul
