Shane, your doctor is right -- what's going on is totally normal. Typical doctor though in that he didn't explain it better. It's caused by swelling. Not sure how long this goes on with open fundos, but in my case it lasted a few weeks and then went away (but it would come back every so often (terrifying me each time, of course, until I'd realize what it was).
Should it recur in the future, just drop back to softer, blander food for the duration. It will clear up then.
